Dance Audition
- Wednesday, September 8 2:30-4:00pm
- Everyone auditioning for a cast role must attend this audition.
- We want to see how everyone moves! We will all learn the same routine- we understand that you are not all trained dancers. Don’t panic! Just do your best and try to have fun.
- Wear comfortable clothes. Bring clothes and shoes to change into if needed.
- Come to the stage, sign in, and get a number sticker for your chest. Be super positive!
Cast Singing/Acting Audition Overview
- Wednesday, September 8 4:15-8:00pm
- Sign up for a 5-minute solo audition on the ACTING/SINGING AUDITIONS sheet on the Choir Room door of E105. Audition sign up will be available following the August 30th Informational Meeting.
- Your audition will take 5 minutes, but plan to be at school a half an hour early and allow time to stay later just in case we are running early or late. Use this time to warm up and get focused and calm. If there aren’t any times left for you to sign up, email SarahStockton@wlcsd.org or see Mrs. Stockton in the choir room.
- What to bring to your audition: SIX ITEMS
- A typed RESUME with music, acting, or dance experiences that you have had. We will provide a template if needed. Focus on experiences that will benefit your career on our stage. Include any previous choir/sing or acting experience, also any unusual talents you may have (juggling, walking on your hands, flips, accents, etc.) This is a way of showing us what you have done and who you are!
- A PHOTO of you. It does not need to be a professional head shot picture, just one that shows your face. A school picture will do. When we see it, it must represent you as you are now. (Not what you looked like 3 years ago).
- A completed show application (attached).
- A completed Costume Deposit Contract (attached).
- A completed 3 page conflict calendar (attached). Please mark any of your conflicts on this calendar. Check with your parents!! (Doctor’s appointments, dance class, sports, marching band, etc). Let us know what is unchangeable and what is flexible. Be as thorough as possible. This will help us create our rehearsal schedule.
- A clean copy of MUSIC for the accompanist. Mark any cuts or changes clearly. See Mrs. Stockton in the choir room if you need help.
What to WEAR to your singing/acting audition:
- Tops: For most auditions, we recommend a bright solid color. Be professional so we can focus on your audition and NOT on inappropriate clothing choices. Not too tight as we don’t want to see every breath you take.
- Bottoms: For most auditions, black pants are the most professional. Jeans are not professional. Pants will be better than a dress, skirt, or shorts. Should you wear a skirt, it should NOT be short. For Mamma Mia specific auditions, do some research on the show to get the “look”!
- Shoes: For most show auditions, we recommend no flip flops, sandals, and most sneakers. Character shoes are appropriate for many auditions. For Mamma Mia Auditions, something like a boat shoe or white Keds may be appropriate. Wear shoes that are comfortable and look clean and professional. It is a good idea to practice in them so your breathing is strong.
-
- Think about what you will wear underneath your clothes for the best support.
- Do the SIT-STAND TEST. Practice walking around, sitting down, and standing up. If you have to adjust any part of your outfit or your hair (we want to see your face), you should make some adjustments. Your choices in clothing and hair will also affect your desire to (or not to) fidget.
Part 1- Acting Audition
- Perform a 30-60 second MONOLOGUE for us. Choose a monologue on your own from online sources OR from the packet that we have prepared for you. Your scene should be well prepared ahead of time. Memorized is best, but you may still audition if you are not. BUT don’t just memorize the lines…. Plan the blocking and acting part. Plan how to best TELL THE STORY to us. Make us want to see more- Don’t forget to let your own personality shine through.
- Think through the story that happens right before your monologue begins. Have in mind both the FRONT story and the BACK STORY of your monologue.
- Show us your best stuff!! BE CONFIDENT!
Part 2-Singing Audition
- You will sing 16-24 measures of a prepared song by yourself. It must be memorized!
- This is a jukebox musical which means all of the music is popular ABBA music! This is not traditional musical theater style. Try to pick a song that will fit your voice and part of our show. We recommend looking at pop music from the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. No current pop music please. Sell yourself to us! Mamma Mia is full of fun, upbeat characters so DON’T BE SHY, TIMID, OR SCARED. It is better to do too much than not enough.
- No a cappella songs allowed at the audition. You must sing with the piano player that we provide. We want to hear you match pitch with the piano while you are singing.
- Bring a clean, easy-to-read copy of your music for the accompanist. No folded, wrinkled music. Meet the accompanist at the piano, quietly sing the first few measures so you can establish your tempo and style. You lead- the accompanist will follow whatever you do.
- HINT: Practice in your bathroom at home in front of the mirror, record yourself, and watch it objectively. Are you just singing or can you tell a story with your song? Broadway is more than just a pretty voice- it tells a story. TELL US A STORY with your song. This is very important.
- Make sure to come into your audition WELL-HYDRATED. Start drinking water for at least 2 hours before your audition. All day long, drink water in preparation. Your vocal chords will thank you for this and will do their best for you if they have been well hydrated earlier in the day!
- Try not to make excuses or tell us that you have been sick or didn’t have time- Just do your best!
- Keep going, no matter what! If you make a mistake- FAKE IT! It is worse to stop.
- Be polite. Say thank you. Make us think that working with you would be a fun experience. This is a family and we want to have a fun and positive experience.
- If you do not have music and need help, email SarahStockton@wlcsd.org or see Mrs. Stockton in the choir room. We are here to help!
